HOW TO GET STARTED!

General Questions

You’ll need a Gi (uniform) to join our Fundamentals classes, and we can lend you one during your two week free trial.  This way, you can dive into the world of BJJ and see if it’s the perfect fit for you.

After your free trial, you can take advantage of our exclusive beginners package which includes a premium Gi, belt, team patch, insurance and more! Speak to a coach for more information.

1.  Warm-Up – The session starts with a warm-up, which includes basic BJJ movements like shrimping, stretching, and some light cardio to get your body ready.

2. Learning Techniques – The instructor will demonstrate techniques, usually focused on a fundamental position or submission. You’ll pair up with a partner to practice.

3. Drilling – You’ll repeat movements to build muscle memory, sometimes with light resistance.

4. Rolling (Sparring) – Rolling is your chance to try out what you've learned!  As a beginner, you won’t be expected to roll right away unless you’re comfortable, and we'll make sure you are paired with an appropriate partner.

5. Class Duration – Classes typically last 1 to 1.5 hours.

Hygiene is really important for BJJ as it's a close contact sport. So please make sure your fingernails and toenails are kept clean and trimmed short.

If you have longer hair you should tie it up in a ponytail or bun during classes.

You'll need to remove piercings or jewellery during your sessions as these can cause injury and/or get damaged.
